Instruments

Fujara (pronounced foo-ya-rah), a traditional flute of Slovakia, is an ancient musical instrument associated with shepherd tradition.

Fujara is a large folk fipple flute of a unique design that combines two flutes - a smaller air channel and a large flute with three holes. It has a diatonic scale and is made in different keys.

Fujara is held upright resting on the player's thigh. It is played by blowing overtones in a cascade of descending notes falling into deeper softer sounds entwined into a melody.

It is usually made of elderberry wood and is decorated by hand carved traditional symbols of the maker's region and colored usually with natural dies.

You can learn more about fujara at UNESCO site here.

Koncovka (pronounced kon-tzov-ka), a traditional flute of Slovakia, is an ancient musical instrument associated with shepherd tradition.

Koncovka is an overtone fipple flute with no vertical holes. It is played by blowing the overtones. By blocking the end hole with a finger, the overtone series moves up a major third. It has an extended Lydian scale (added sharp sixth).  In spite of its simple construction, fast runs, trills and vibrato are available to the player, as well as the ability to play set melodies in various modes. Koncovka flute does not modulate, therefore different keys require flutes of different tuning.

It is relatively easy to play.
